Many times in Nursing Schools all over the country, Instructors forget to mention the multiple different certifications that a nurse can work towards once in the working world. Personally I had no idea that a nurse could specialize nor did I have any clue where to start. Looking back now I realize that these certifications set you apart from your peers and give you a depth of knowledge that is not seen in your average healthcare organization around the world. Here are a few certifications that I see a trending need for this year.
1. Certified in Infection Prevention and Control "CIC"
The "CIC" certification is issued by The Certification Board of Infection Control & Epidemiology, Inc. (CBIC®). Their website states, "They are a voluntary, autonomous, multidisciplinary board that provides direction for and administers the certification process for professionals in infection control and applied epidemiology." While working with organizations, I saw a regulatory trend toward more findings in Infection Control so I chose to get this certification. It has been extremely beneficial for my company and has gotten many clients that are looking for Infection Prevention and Control Oversight, Eduction, etc. Check this one out at www.cbic.org .
2. Certified Rural Health Clinic Professional "CRHCP"
The "CRHCP" certification is issued by The National Association of Rural Health Clinics. Their website states, "The NARHC is offering RHC leaders a full spectrum course designed to teach you how to operate a successful Rural Health Clinic." This certification has helped one of my students learn the ins and outs of Rural Health Clinics and make a pile of money helping providers set these up, license, and accredit them. 3. Certified Joint Commission Professional "CJCP"
The "CJCP" certification is issued by the Joint Commission Resources. Their website states, "The CJCP represents the highest level of accreditation knowledge and achievement in related patient safety and quality issues." This certification is extremely beneficial for helping organizations that use The Joint Commission as their accreditation body. Knowledge of these regulations allows you to mitigate problems in their organizations and gives them an advantage to prepare for their audit. These are just a few of the many certifications that you could get as a nurse to set you apart from the crowd. All these certifications provide value to organizations and help improve the most important thing in healthcare: Patient Outcomes.
